TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The dirty, abandoned building was illuminated only by the pale moonlight shining in
through the boarded-up windows and cracks that had formed in the walls over decades of
neglect. Garbage and discarded bottles of ale filled the hallway floor. The words
"Help me" are carved into one of the doors, a silent cry for salvation that was never
heard, or, more likely, was simply ignored.
Inside one of the rooms was a man sitting on a filthy mattress setting upon a rotten
wooden frame. Bound by a straitjacket, the man growls as he fights against his
restraints. A wooden devil's mask painted black with red highlights hides the man's
true face. Behind the mask, his eyes glowed a terrible shade of red. Madness seeped
from the man like a thick fog.
Slamming his back against the wall, the man howled as dust fell from the ceiling. He
continued to fight with his restraints as his head quickly cocked from one side to the
other in the most inhuman of ways. He stared into the darkness and said, "The CHORUS
OF FURIES enters, questing like hounds. Ho! Clear is here the trace of him we seek:
Follow the track of blood, the silent sign."
The man slammed the back of his head against the wall over and over. "Follow, seek him
round and round. Scent and snuff and scan the ground, lest unharmed he slip away."
He laughed maniacally and dropped to his knees. His voice dropped to an eerie and
disturbing whisper. "Countdown to termination: 10, 9, 8, 7, six, six, six, 5, 4, 3,
2, 1." He paused, then added, "We all have our demons. We all have nightmares that
consume our souls, but I have grown to call mine friends. Their soft whispers growing,
crescendoing into screams from the abyss. I must embrace the darkness, for it takes a
monster to kill a monster. You have brought this upon yourself. May God have mercy
upon your wretched soul."
The room goes pitch black for just a moment. When the moonlight returned, the man in
the devil's mask was gone and the straitjacket laid unoccupied upon the floor. An evil
laugh echoed through the building sending ravens into flight, their cawing chilling
those within earshot to the soul. In a corner of the room completely engulfed in
darkness, a pair of red eyes appeared. A black mass flew outward consuming all things
that got within its path.
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat upon him was Death, and
Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of
Alastari, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death and with the beasts of
the land.

Niytyole Island, The Don't Drop Inn
Short Leisch and Bleep Darkfart Says sat at a table downing shots. "Another good
turn," Leisch said smiling.
"That it was," Darkfart added. He slammed the shot and pounded the glass on the table.
"Waitress," he shouted, "another round."
Suddenly, Leisch wrinkled his brow. He nudged Darkfart. "Dude, dude, at the bar.. is
that.. Bookie?"
Darkfart laughed. "Son of a bitch. I do believe it is. I can't believe he's crazy
enough to come in here by himself."
"Wanna *bleep* with him?"
"Damn right I do."

Bookie felt a tap on his shoulder. Considering no one had really spoken to him the
entire night, he was a bit confused but even more curious. He turned to be confronted
by two very drunk Big Lake Bandits' warriors.
"Oh, hey, boys. How you doing?" Bookie said with a smile.
"You're pretty brave being here all by yourself, little man," Darkfart growled.
"Yeah," Leisch spit. "You been talking a lot of crap. Can you back it up?"
Bookie sighed. "Why are you boys trying to turn this violent? I'm just trying to enjoy
a drink. Why don't ya sit down, and I'll share the ale."
"OR," Leisch said, "we slap the taste out of your mouth and toss you out in the
streets?"
"You really don't want to do this, fellas," Bookie replied.
"You're all by yourself, Bookie. This is EXACTLY what we want," Darkfart said all but
foaming at the mouth.
Bookie's smile widened. "You sure I'm alone?"
"What is he talking about?" Leisch asked.
"Hell if I know," Darkfart replied.
Bookie pointed behind the pair of Big Lake Bandit warriors. They slowly turned to see
Cluricus and Ultraist standing behind them. Before they could react, Cluricus caught
Leisch under the chin with a thrust kick. Ultraist pulled his fist back and Darkfart
flinched. Bookie took advantage of the situation and locked in a rear-naked choke on
the warrior. Darkfart's arms flailed wildly until he was laid flat of the ground.
Cluricus gave Ultraist a Too Sweet and helped Bookie back to his feet. Bookie looked
around frantically, finally turning his gaze to the closest table where Gentle Ben and
Blackhart were drinking. With one swipe he cleared the table and sent the bottle of
ale crashing to the ground.
Gentle Ben jumped up with fire in his eyes. "What the hell, Bookie?"
Bookie turned to the bartender. "These two drink the rest of the night on my tab."
Ben instantly became docile. "Well, in that case, carry on."
Cluricus covered the table top with lighter fluid and set it ablaze. Bookie picked
Leisch off the ground and whispered, "There are certain rules, but nobody said
anything about putting you schmucks through a flaming table."
Bookie Irish-whipped Leisch into the arms of Ultraist who picked him up off the
ground, spun, and slammed him through the table. Leisch convulsed wildly as the flames
went out. Ultraist bent down and growled, "Tell Den to keep my name out of his
*bleep*'n mouth, or next time I'm sending you home in a bodybag."
Bookie snapped his fingers, and the bartender got a black bag from beneath the bar and
handed it over. Cluricus' eyes glowed. "Oh, my God. Did you really? Did you bring,"
Bookie opened the bag and dumped its contents all over the floor. Cluricus screamed,
"THUMBTACKS!!"
Ultraist dragged Darkfart's limp body over and placed his face on the thumbtacks. Pain
Master got up from his table and got in between Bookie and his prey. "What the heck
are you doing, man?"
Bookie chuckled. "I'm gonna curb stomp this fool into thumbtacks. You're lucky I
didn't bring a board with barbwire stapled to it."
"No!" Pain Master growled. "This is to freakin' far, even for these pieces of crap. If
you think you're doing this, you'll have to go through me first."
Cluricus rolled his eyes and glanced at Bookie. "I thought you said this guy was
cool."
Bookie sweated as he analyzed the situation. "He is. I don't know what his problem is
right now."
"My problem is," Pain paused and turned towards Darkfart who was slowly getting to his
feet. Pain smiled. "My problem is this fool is mine!" Pain ran over and put all his
weight on the back of Darkfart's head and drove him face-first into the thumbtacks.
The crowd cringed as they watched.
Ultraist reached in his cloak and pulled out a Bullet Club shirt and tossed it to
Pain. "Welcome to the Club, kid," Ultraist said. The four men then lifted their arms
and did a Guns Up.
Bookie took a seat on the bar and opened a scroll. "Ladies and gentlemen, effective
immediately, The Don't Drop Inn is under new management and will henceforth be known
as The Loucas Lounge East, or simply the Loucas Lounge. Excuse us as over the next few
months we will be upgrading the facilities to make them one of the top-notch bars in
all of Alastari. If anyone has any questions, you can direct them to your new owner--
and that would be me. Welcome to the Dark Federation, boys and girls. For the rest of
night, drinks are on the house. Now, get these two bums out of my bar."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
*She wears a simple dress of homespun cotton, embroidered in red. Four black ribbons
are pinned to her dress. A naked curved sword lies on her lap. Her long raven hair,
unbraided now after her battle, falls over her back and shoulders, framing her pretty,
peasant face.*
This Island is a place of braggadocio, of the noise of men and their ridiculous egos.
I will wast no time for such foolishness. I have buried many friends here; such is
the way of the sword. Yet it seems my time in the sun now. In my land, we say, "No
sabes lo fuerte que hasta que te toca sue fuerte" -- you don't know your strength
until it's your time to be strong.
And so now is my time; yet tomorrow is promised to none. Meet me on the sands, if you
dare, and we shall see what tomorrow brings.

SPY REPORT
Greetings, warriors of NIYTYOLE ISLAND! Once again I've been called out of
retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Woof! DARK MECHANICUM
were a bunch of dogs after CRUEL NIGHTS got through with 'em! 3rd ain't so sweet as
1st! Who can explain it? Not you, not me, not CRUEL NIGHTS' opponents, after
watching them shoot up the ranks from 13th to 1st. Looking for a good fight,
confident, skilled, tough opponents. Well don't look at THE DEMONIC PICKLES, cause
they dropped by 14. It seems so recently people were saying OLD HOBBITS was washed
up, finished. But 3-1-0 moved them up 4. I guess they're washed no more... THE
DREAMING's walking tall now that they went 4-1-0 their first time out. But we know
what awaits them soon... What's with SQUIRE PHLEGM? He actually beat DARK
MECHANICUM's CYKUM, and walked away with 23 more points from the fight. Laughs were
big at XXX BANDITS while they watched SUN RISE clobber TI'ALANA. She lost 19 points
and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. See how the Duelmaster
Bloodfeuded MELANCHOLIC BLISS' SORROW'S ANGEL? That sort of initiative is how she
got where she is now. SORROW'S ANGEL was reminded on the sands why CARMEN is
Duelmaster. Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some
team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... How well I know the
feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, VICIOUS
DELITE! The bums at BRASH BROS XMAS couldn't face the challenges from VICIOUS
DELITE! No excuse for that! How well I know the feeling of being the most
challenged warrior, FRIGHTFUL WEATHER! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to
haunt you. Taunt your opponent SOCK SNATCHER! That was my lucky charm when I was
unfairly challenged. (and by 24 points!) STITCHES should have an easy win.
STITCHES left the match looking worse than when he went in, after SOCK SNATCHER, with
a 0-2-0, walked all over him. LORD URSURPER didn't quite know what to make of a
challenge he received from TYLER'S BROTHER of THUNDERBIRDS, who is 25 points below
him. TYLER'S BROTHER perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was dispatched by
LORD URSURPER and ended up with 90 recognition points. I hate going to the effort of
writing about the kind of fights that HAND OF DARKNESS gets in. He fights people
like BABA YAGA, 11 points below. I thought HAND OF DARKNESS showed great skill and
promise when he defeated BABA YAGA. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Sending a warrior to the Dark Arena reminds the others they'd
better shape up. Tough beans, CHO GALL. That's what a 8-12-1 gets you. ARTHAS
looked pretty sick and surprised when he learned FORCE OF FIVE is sending him to the
Dark Arena! Whadd'he expect with a 9-11-1? Sending a warrior to the Dark Arena
reminds the others they'd better shape up. Tough beans, SAMURO. That's what a
6-14-0 gets you. TYLER'S BROTHER, with his forgettable 16-18-1, was dealt death by
LORD URSURPER in a forgettable match. THUNDERBIRDS didn't seem to mind very much.
LORD URSURPER had a sure-fire victory when he challenged TYLER'S BROTHER, 25 points
below him. Was anyone really surprised when TYLER'S BROTHER bit it? Someone told
SORROW'S ANGEL that ALASTARI AMIGOS! never Bloodfeuded, that she'd have an easy kill.
Well, I'm sure whoever misled you is right sorry. JOY'S DEMON was plum wore out
after SHORT LEISCH pounded 'im silly in a Bloodfeud. MELANCHOLIC BLISS'll have to
get a little better before going after SHORT LEISCH again! Many a warrior has met
his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note!
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
