TEAM SPOTLIGHT
"Do NOT GO GENTLE"

For generations, the City has expanded, enslaving the forest peoples and cutting down
their world. Those who remain are at the breaking point.
* * * *
Smiling up at him, its tiny hand holds onto his finger, and the baby coos and giggles
as his finger wiggles its whole arm. "He has a strong grip like his father," the young
woman murmurs laughingly and kisses them both as the baby's other tiny hand pulls her
full head of flowing hair.
* * * *
Birds chirp the forest awake, and a most breeze blows morning mist over a leaf
collecting a drop that grows then rolls off and down through the branches, splashing
onto his closed eyelid. The smile-creases fade from his temples as he lowers his half-
braided head, limps out of the trees into the Clearing and joins his voice with the
others gathering in a Circle around him calling out the FarAway across the tall
grasses. It is his turn in the Center. Their feet ground in the fog as they stand in
the Wailing Ring, their eyelids lowered, their white-beared, half-braided head raised,
waiting for the last Center to return.
First he hears the Runner's Whoop in the trees, then he sees her WyldEyes bigger with
each longstride across the clearing toward him, carrying a bag on her back. She leaps
into the Circle, holding out the bag to him, sad and gasping, "Father!" The smile-
creases fade from his temples. "Grina." His wrinkled hands tremble into the bag, pull
the white hairs, and lift up the half-braided head out of the bag. He slowly raises up
the white-bearded head and plants it onto the top of his staff, a moist breeze blowing
mist over the hairs collecting drops. He raises his staff and the Elders circle around
him, each pausing to face the Center Past and Present, nod sad recognition, and raise
their own staff. As the last staff is raised, the red glow of sunrise breaks over the
treetops and lights up the clearing's tall grasses as a WyldFire, and he raises his
voice, summoning each line to sound as a strong wind whipping into a thunderclap and
lightning followed by sheets of cleansing rain:
"Do NOT GO GENTLE into this Doomed Fight,
WyldRage should BURN and RAVE at the Start of Night;
Wyld! Rage! AGAINST THE DYING of the Life."
He plants his staff standing up in the tall WyldFire grasses, the signal to Grina who
nods to him and then to the other Runners, who then nod to their Ring Elders and run
on ahead through the trees, the WhiteBeards walking after them back into the World. He
waits until he is alone with the Old One in the Clearing, then turns away finally from
the Past, and finds his new staff in the World. The smile-creases fade from his
temples as The New Center lowers his head and limps out of the trees into the Barren
toward the City.
SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, DUSKMOOR? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. MOVIE PUNS turned their 1-2-1 turn into
a 6th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on
hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 3-1-1 is nice, but don't get cocky, MONSTERS 25M5,
the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see BASILISK win a fight and gain 26 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, KARK
beat THE BLOB and THE BLOB lost 13 points. You're breakin' my heart. I'm not in a
very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new,
don't you, DUSKMOOR?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
What's the big D? TASK FORCE GREEN was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily
livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like OF WOLF & VENOM 2 avoided
them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh,
I'm frightfully impressed, WILLIAM L. WELLER was this turn's most challenged warrior.
Watch that ego swell, sports fans.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. Nipped in the bud, you might say, was
VARDA of VALHALLA BOUND this turn. Course, I wouldn't say that, so much as have a
belly laugh. Heh heh. And now a passing thought on a warrior dying young (COBRA of
OF WOLF & VENOM 2): You had your chance and now you're dead. Oh well... Nipped in
the bud, you might say, was OATH of BLOOD GANG 825A this turn. Course, I wouldn't
say that, so much as have a belly laugh. Heh heh. And now a passing thought on a
warrior dying young (HIGHWAY of TASK FORCE GREEN): You had your chance and now
you're dead. Oh well... Consider GOLDFINGER gone, and ONE HIT WONDERS unfeeling,
